Why this market is hot in 2026

India is the largest producer of coir and coir products globally. The coir pith market is driven by the booming horticulture, protected cultivation, and hydroponics sectors, both domestically and internationally. Exports of coir pith from India reached ₹1,500 Cr in FY2024, showing consistent growth. Coir Board Annual Report FY2024, May 2026

The demand for organic and sustainable growing media is increasing worldwide. Coir pith briquettes offer an eco-friendly alternative to peat moss, leading to strong export potential, especially to Europe, the USA, and the Middle East, where environmental regulations are stringent. BharatSeal industry analysis based on APEDA & Coir Board export data, May 2026

Product description

Rural/semi-urban area near coconut processing clusters (Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Goa, Maharashtra, Andaman & Nicobar, Lakshadweep). The unit produces 2,00,000 kg of coir pith briquettes per year at full nameplate capacity, with a 5-year ramp from 30% to 90% utilisation. Sold at an average ₹15 per kg of coir pith briquettes blended across SKUs and channels. Target buyers span Horticulture farms (e.g., large nurseries, polyhouses, protected cultivation), Hydroponics farms (for soilless cultivation), International growers and nurseries, with online distribution via IndiaMART (B2B platform for bulk orders), TradeIndia (B2B platform, good for export leads), Alibaba.com (for international buyers, requires export readiness).

Industrial scenario (2026)

India is the largest producer of coir and coir products globally. The coir pith market is driven by the booming horticulture, protected cultivation, and hydroponics sectors, both domestically and internationally. Exports of coir pith from India reached ₹1,500 Cr in FY2024, showing consistent growth. The demand for organic and sustainable growing media is increasing worldwide. Coir pith briquettes offer an eco-friendly alternative to peat moss, leading to strong export potential, especially to Europe, the USA, and the Middle East, where environmental regulations are stringent. BharatSeal's editorial layer (12 'Hot in 2026' + 10 'Starter-friendly' tags) places this project in the wider 2026 Indian MSME landscape. Macro tailwinds include current PMEGP margin-money (15% urban, 25% rural, 35% special-category) plus the relevant sector schemes flagged below.

Basis & presumption of report

This DPR is prepared on the basis of BharatSeal's live market_inputs snapshot dated 2026-05-15, with capex prices, raw-material rates, wages, fuel, electricity and rent values resolved from primary public sources cited in Section 19. Plant capacity is 2,00,000 kg of coir pith briquettes/year. Working capital cycle is 3 months. Bank loan is sized at 75% of project cost over 5 years at 9.75% p.a., with PMEGP margin money assumed at 15% and beneficiary contribution at 10%. Depreciation follows the asset-specific lives in Section 16. Income tax is provided at 25% on positive PBT. Sundry debtors and creditors are taken at 15-day equivalents of revenue and COGS respectively — Indian MSME finance norm. The 5-year utilisation ramp is editorial (BharatSeal industry benchmark) and is the largest single judgement in the model — three scenarios (Section 6) and a sensitivity grid (Section 7) stress-test it.

Location advantages

  • Sector cluster proximity

Coir pith raw material: Coconut processing units, coir defibering mills in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka.

  • Buyer concentration

Horticulture farms (e.g., large nurseries, polyhouses, protected cultivation) demand is concentrated in your operating region — see local-signal section for district-level checks.

  • Scheme + subsidy access

PMEGP + Coir Vikas Yojana / Mahila Coir Yojana are actively releasing funds in 2026 — your nodal officer is the entry point.

  • Skilled labour availability

Coir Board Training Centre programs (e.g., Coir Pith Processing, Coir Products Manufacturing) – 1-3 month courses. runs in most Tier-2 cities, ensuring trained operators are reachable.

  • Logistics + compliance ecosystem

BIS-accredited labs + GeM vendor onboarding + APEDA / Spice Board / MNRE empanelment all available within 200 km in most operating states.
